On the higher parts of lofty mountains, more snow falls in each year than melts. A portion of this snow goes away with the wind before it consolidates, but a large portion of snow accumulates in depressions and hollows and is gradually converted into glacier ice, which descends by slowly flowing into the deeper valleys where it help swell perennial streams.

The most characteristic feature of this region is the prevalence of coniferous trees that form vast coniferous forests that cover a large part of the Alps Subalpine region surface.

The grape vine, which is far more tolerant of cold than the olive trees, but to produce good wines it is needed, at the season of ripening, a degree of heat not much less than that needed by the more delicate olive tree. These conditions are satisfied in the deeper pre-Alps valleys, and up to a considerable height on slopes exposed to the Sun.

The evergreen olive tree grows wild on the rocks around the Alpine lake, especially at Lake Garda, where even lemons are cultivated on a large scale. The olive tree has been known to survive severe cold when of short duration, but a good olive oil cannot be produced with success where frosts are prolonged or where the mean winter temperature falls below 5.5 Celsius degrees.

Climate in the Alpine area is to great extend influenced by the airmass, which can be divided into four types: the western winds with mild, moist air masses deriving from the Atlantic sea, the cool polar air from the north, the dry continental air masses from the east and the warm, Mediterranean air from the south. A further climatic phenomenon in the Alpine mountains is a warm airmass, which is called “foehn” and blows in spring–summer.
